Chocolate in Summer – How to Enjoy Sweet Treats in the Heat

Chocolate is not reserved only for cold days, warm cakes and winter drinks. With proper chocolate storage and a little creativity, its rich flavour can become the base of refreshing summer desserts, homemade ice cream and cold drinks.

High temperatures do, however, call for a different approach. Instead of long baking and heavy creams, the advantage goes to simple preparation, seasonal fruit, light whipped cream and desserts served straight from the fridge.

How to store chocolate properly during the summer

The ideal place for storing chocolate is dry, dark and cool, with a stable temperature. Large temperature swings can affect its texture and appearance. If chocolate melts and then hardens again, a light bloom may appear on its surface. This change is usually not a sign of spoilage, but it can compromise the smoothness and fullness of the flavour.

On moderately warm days it is enough to keep chocolate in a closed cupboard, away from the stove, windows and direct sunlight. During periods of intense heat the refrigerator can be a practical solution, but only with appropriate protection.

Chocolate should be placed in a well-sealed container or bag so it does not absorb moisture and the odours of other foods. Before opening the package, leave it at room temperature for a while. This reduces the chance of condensation, which can affect the surface of the product.

Pralines with cream, fruit or delicate fillings should be stored according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Artisan and craft chocolates may also contain ingredients that require more careful storage than classic chocolate bars.

Homemade chocolate ice cream without complicated preparation

A creamy homemade chocolate ice cream does not always require a special machine. A simple recipe can be made from just a few ingredients, and the freezer does most of the work.

Ingredients

  • 400 ml of cold whipping cream
  • 200 g of sweetened condensed milk
  • 120 g of dark chocolate
  • a pinch of salt
  • fresh strawberries or other fruit as desired

Melt the chocolate slowly over a double boiler or in the microwave in short intervals. After a few minutes of cooling, mix it with the condensed milk. Then whip the cold cream into soft peaks.

Gradually add the chocolate mixture to the whipped cream, folding it in gently with a spatula to keep it airy. If you like, you can fold in biscuit pieces, chopped chocolate or finely diced strawberries. Transfer the mixture to a container, cover it and leave it in the freezer for at least six hours.

Before serving, it is a good idea to leave the ice cream at room temperature for five to ten minutes. It will be easier to scoop, and the chocolate flavour will become more pronounced.

Cold chocolate drinks for quick refreshment

Cold chocolate can be light and refreshing if prepared with a moderate amount of sugar. For a basic drink it is enough to mix cold milk, cocoa, a little melted dark chocolate and a few ice cubes.

If the cocoa is hard to dissolve, first stir it into a small amount of warm milk. Only then add the remaining cold milk and ice. The drink can be finished with whipped cream, a pinch of cinnamon or grated chocolate.

For a fruity version, you can put the following in a blender:

  • one banana or a few strawberries
  • 250 ml of cold milk
  • a tablespoon of cocoa
  • a few ice cubes
  • a little honey or sugar to taste

Such a drink combines the freshness of fruit with the distinctive aroma of chocolate, with no baking or lengthy preparation needed.

Light desserts from the fridge

When it is too hot for a classic cake, desserts in a glass are a good choice. Crushed biscuits can serve as a base layered with chocolate cream, fruit and whipped cream. The dessert should be left in the fridge for at least an hour so the layers can set.

A simple cream can be made from mascarpone, melted chocolate and whipped cream. If dark chocolate is used, extra sugar is often unnecessary. For a lighter texture you can add a few spoonfuls of yogurt, while strawberries, raspberries or sour cherries will bring pleasant freshness and acidity.

In summer, chocolate is best discovered through contrasts: cold and creamy, sweet and fruity, smooth and crunchy. A scoop of ice cream with biscuit pieces, a chilled praline or a chocolate drink with fruit can satisfy a sweet craving without heavy desserts and long hours by the oven.
